Sock Pumpkin

Materials Needed

4-inch Styrofoam ball
large orange sock with a 6-inch ribbed cuff
(you can dye a white sock if you don't have any orange ones around)
Acrylic Paint: Christmas green, White, Bright Red & Nutmeg Brown
Paint Brushes: 1/2-inch wash
#6 round bristle
Felt scraps: Black & orange
Black fine-point permanent marker
Sewing needle & orange thread
Sour apple plastic covered 18-gauge wire
Wire cutters
Serrated knife
Tacky glue or hot glue
Pumpkin Face Patterns

Instructions

1. Using a sewing needle and orange thread, tightly gather sock below ribbed cuff.  Trim off toe of sock, leaving approximately 1 1/2 inches (for pumpkin stem).
2. Using a serrated knife, cut approximately 1/2 inch off Styrofoam ball at top and bottom.  Place ball in sock, gather top edge of ribbed cuff around the bottom of the ball and glue in place (if using hot glue, be careful not to touch metal tip to Styrofoam ball as it will melt).
3.  Use patterns provided to cut one small leaf and two large leaves from remainder of sock; cut eyes and mouth from black felt and nose from orange felt.
4.  With acrylic paint, use 1/2-inch wash brush to paint stem Nutmeg brown and leaves Christmas green; use bristle brush to dry brush cheeks with bright red.  Dip paint brush handle in white to make a dot on each eye as shown in pattern.  Let dry.
5.  Referring to photo for placement, glue on eyes, nose and mouth; let dry.  With black fine-point marker, draw eyebrows, eye lashes and check lines; outline nose and leaves, draw veins on leaves.
6. Cut a 12-inch and a 4-inch length of wire.  Poke one end of 12-inch piece through one large leaf; poke opposite end through small leaf.  Coil ends of wire to form tendrils (wrap around a pencil, ink pen or paint brush handle) and wrap center of wire several times around pumpkin stem.  Glue remaining large leaf to pumpkin at stem.  Coil 4-inch piece of wire and glue to pumpkin on opposite side of stem.  Position and shape tendrils as desired.
