In order to be sure we are
providing an education that would parallel that which our children would receive
in a public school setting we are following
Oklahoma's PASS standards as well as
national standards (our list is from World Book).
Our study style is an
eclectic mix of several methods, but has a strong focus on traditional teaching.
We have a vast collection of text books covering a wide range of topics and
levels. I started collecting these as a child (I've always been fascinated
with learning) and we are using some of these along with others I have picked up
on eBay and through used book stores. We are also using a lot of unit
studies, something I've been doing with both girls since our oldest daughter's
preschool days.
I am not fond of the
curriculum "packages" that have everything included in one book or
from a single publishing company, we like more
diversity in learning. To learn more about the various programs we are
using, check out our core subjects and enrichment pages.
In a way, we have been part-time homeschoolers right
from the start; even during their public school years we did a great number of
learning activities with our children. I would encourage anyone who is
interested in homeschooling to take some time with your child to do those
learning activites: take an educational field trip, complete a unit study, try
your hand at exploring a favorite part of history, nature or anything that
facinates you. We are all naturally curious about the world around us in
one way or another - find where your child's curiousity lies and explore with
them.
